Liverpool Airport will feature in the expansion, hosting new flights to Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, while Luton Airport will be linked to Sharm el Sheikh and Paphos.

Gatwick Airport will also host two new easyJet services - to Hamburg and Porto - and Edinburgh Airport will be given a new connection to Lyon.

The range of new routes - which will also include intra-European flights serving destinations such as Rome and Amsterdam - will come into operation gradually between October this year and February 2010.

Andy Harrison, chief executive of easyJet, said: "We are delighted to be announcing even more new routes from the UK and across Europe.

"Times are tough for consumers, so we are proud to offer great year-round holiday opportunities in fantastic places such as Paphos, Fuerteventura and Sharm El Sheikh for incredibly low prices."

During the summer season this year, easyJet's additional services will include flights to Athens, Corfu and Dalaman from Manchester Airport.

The next race in the 2009 season will be held at the Nurburgring near Cologne in Germany on July 12th before the championship heads to Budapest, Hungary on July 26th.

Spain will be one of the most popular destinations for racing fans this summer when Valencia hosts the Grand Prix of Europe on August 23rd.

Last year, this race was won by Ferrari driver Felipe Massa, who set a lap record on his way to victory.

The Ferrari team have not enjoyed anything close to the form they achieved in 2008 this year, however, currently lying fourth in the constructors' table behind Brawn-Mercedes, RBR-Renault and Toyota.

Following the race in Spain, the World Championship will head to Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium (August 30th) and Monza in Italy (September 11th) before the second Formula One night race in Singapore on September 27th.

Jenson Button is currently leading the drivers' section of the Formula One championship, meaning there is plenty of British interest in the sport this year.

In further changes to its winter network for 2009-10, the airline will increase its frequency of services to both these destinations to three daily flights from Heathrow Airport on October 25th.

There will also be adjustments to British Airways' range of flights to Rome, with frequency from Heathrow Airport being increased from five to six services a day and the number of flights from Gatwick Airport dropping to one a day.

Richard Tams, head of UK and Ireland sales for the airline, said: "We're pleased to be offering increased frequencies to these European destinations.

"It's in response to demand and the additional flights to Warsaw have been timed to make it easier for our customers to connect to our long-haul operation."

Europe is not the only region that will be served by extra British Airways services this winter, with additional flights to Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados and St Lucia also being launched.

The airline will receive its fourth A380 at the end of July, enabling it to increase the frequency of A380 flights to London, which operate via Singapore, from three to five per week.

Los Angeles will be served by four A380 services per week, with both changes due to come into effect on August 6th.

Qantas spokesman Rob Gurney said: "By November, Qantas will operate daily A380 services to London and Los Angeles from Sydney and will increase Melbourne-Los Angeles services from two to three A380 flights per week.

"By the end of 2009 this year Qantas will operate 34 services per week between Australia and the UK and US with its A380 fleet."

The airline launched flights using the A380 in October 2008 and has since carried more than 200,000 passengers on the aircraft.

It was recently announced that Qantas had introduced an online check-in service for its international passengers.

Peter Roeves, the landmark customer, was travelling to Dubai and on to Perth, Australia to visit his son and granddaughter.

Mr Roeves said that being able to fly directly to Dubai from Newcastle Airport made his journey to Perth much easier than when he once had to travel via London.

Since it was introduced in September 2007, Emirates' daily service to Dubai has proved popular with travellers heading to the United Arab Emirates and on to popular long-haul destinations such as Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Mauritius.

Lauri Berryman, Emirates manager for UK north, said: "A quarter of a million passengers in less than two years is a significant achievement.

"We are delighted and grateful for the support we have received from passengers and cargo shippers from across the region."

The airline launched a promotion at Newcastle Airport earlier this month offering economy fares that included an automatic upgrade to business class.

He added: "Qantas will again offer a $25,000 cash prize to the winner of the sustainable tourism category at the National Australian Tourism Awards.

"The Qantas Group has a carefully coordinated approach to managing the environmental impacts of its operations in place. As a result we established this award last year to reward tourism operators who have demonstrated a real commitment to their environmental sustainability."

From its Australian hubs of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, Qantas operates an international network that includes flights to London, Los Angeles, Auckland and Singapore.

Travellers will also be able to make use of new flights to Las Vegas that British Airways is set to launch from Heathrow Airport.

Finnair is currently in the process of renewing its long-haul fleet, with a total of five new Airbus A330s set to be delivered this year.

All of the planes are equipped with a new cabin design which the airline claims has a "lighter" feel.

In a statement on the new additions to its fleet, Finnair said: "These aircraft represent the latest in travel comfort, modern technology and first class fuel efficiency."

The airline announced recently that it will use the Airbus A330 to operate flights to the holiday hotspot of Phuket in Thailand from next winter.

From its base in Helsinki, Finnair also offers flights to long-haul destinations including Mumbai, Hong Kong and Tokyo.

The airline will launch three weekly flights to Vilnius on September 10th, increasing frequency to a daily service on October 24th.

Vilnius is already served by three Aer Lingus flights a week from the airline's base in Dublin.

Augusta Jaudegyte, director of the Lithuanian tourism office in the UK, said: "The Aer Lingus decision to launch direct flights to Vilnius is great news. This year is very special for Vilnius and Lithuania. We celebrate the millennium anniversary of the first mention of Lithuania's name in a historical source and Vilnius is the European Capital of Culture.

"The new, convenient and competitively priced flights will definitely help to attract more tourists from the UK."

The Vilnius service is one of six winter routes that Aer Lingus will be launching this year from London Gatwick, its first base outside Ireland.

Bucharest and Eindhoven will host new flights operated by the airline from October 25th, along with Tenerife, Warsaw and Lanzarote.

The route will be served by three weekly flights using a new long-range aircraft that the airline is set to receive from Boeing later this year.

Qatar Airways has plans to further extend its network in Australia by launching flights to Sydney once the Melbourne service is underway.

Mr Al Baker said: "I know the travelling public is eager for us to begin serving Australia and I've had many people ask me about our direct routes to Melbourne and Sydney.

"We're finalising some details with regulatory authorities in Australia and once we've received the necessary aircraft from Boeing, we will be ready to operate."

From its hub in Doha, Qatar Airways operates an international network of flights to destinations including Cape Town, Bali and Mumbai, as well as several destinations in the US through a codeshare with United Airlines.

Artefacts that feature in the display include 16th century world maps created by cartographers in Portugal and Italy, African hunting horns and rare terracotta statues and religious icons from Brazil.

Commenting on the marketing campaigns being launched to ensure that people keep visiting Spain, Ms Hernandez said: "We want to emphasise the idea of how Spain is a home from home for British tourists.

"Almost 90 per cent of Britons who travelled to Spain in 2008 had already been there on holiday before. The links between both countries are undeniable and strong."

The display will be open at the Drassanes Reials in Barcelona, which once served as a medieval shipyard, until September 6th this year.

Exhibits on show include some of the pharaoh's jewels, a replica quartz sarcophagus, three funeral chambers and the famous mask of Tutankhamun, which now stands as an icon of ancient Egypt.

Some of the items in the exhibition have never even been seen together at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

Put together by German artist Wulf Kohl and project designer Paul Heinen, the display is designed to be both educational and entertaining.

The discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb by Howard Carter in 1922 is one of the most important archaeological finds in history.

Due to run until August 23rd, the campaign will see more than 200 London taxis decorated with an image of the Korean Air 'network feather', showing some of the destinations in Asia, Australia and other regions that travellers can fly to with the airline.

The most popular destinations that travellers can reach after catching flights from London Heathrow to Seoul include Auckland, Bali, Sydney and Singapore.

Korean Air operates its service from Heathrow Airport with a Boeing 747 providing three flight classes.

Jeong Soo Park, the airline's general manager in London, said: "This year's UK taxi advertising campaign, symbolised by our 'network feather', promotes Korean Air's growing international network.

"By launching diversified marketing campaigns, Korean Air will continue to show its dedication to serving the UK market."

Earlier this month, Korean Air extended its international network with new flights to Shizuoka in Japan.

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) announced that it will be opening three new properties in Africa this year, two in South Africa and one in Kenya.

Already open in Pretoria is the 304-room Holiday Inn Express Sunnypark, which has been launched as part of a global relaunch of the Holiday Inn brand.

The other property that has opened in South Africa is the Crowne Plaza Johannesburg, while the Crowne Plaza Nairobi, IHG's second hotel in Kenya, will begin welcoming guests in the autumn.

John Bamsey, the hotel chain's chief operating officer in the Middle East and Africa, said: "We will be developing our Africa portfolio with more than 30 properties over the next three to five years and these will all be in prime locations and high-growth cities.

"This will strengthen our position of becoming the leading operator on the continent and to contribute significantly to IHG's overall portfolio."

The countries in which IHG intends to open new properties over the coming years include Tanzania, Angola and Nigeria.

Following recent fluctuations in currency values, the pound has increased by almost 24 per cent in value against the Jamaican dollar, the study found.

Iceland is a close second in terms of affordability for Brits, with the krona losing 23 per cent of its value since the beginning of the year, while Poland's zloty has fallen by 19 per cent against the pound.

Ice's research also found that Hungary, Croatia, the United Arab Emirates and Hong Kong have become more affordable for people travelling from the UK this year.

Andrew Hamilton, head of marketing for the currency exchange firm, said: "Jamaica offers the best of a lot of worlds for holidaymakers - sun, great beaches and fantastic value against the pound.

"But closer to home we're seeing some real holiday hotspots emerge offering fantastic value for money - notably Croatia, Turkey and Bulgaria."

Ice released a study this year revealing the top 20 foreign currencies for Brits, with the euro and the US dollar topping the table and the baht of Thailand in third place.

From June to November, thousands of humpback whales embark on a migration that takes them along the eastern coast of Australia.

A number of companies offer whale-watching tours, including Sea World Whale Watch, which operates excursions departing every day, weather permitting, with departures at 11:00 local time.

The firm experienced a 100 per cent rate of whale sightings during its inaugural season last year.

Trevor Long, director of marine sciences at Sea World, said: "Whale-watching is a truly wonderful experience and it's something that everyone should do at least once in their lifetime.

"The humpback whale population that migrates along our east coast is growing by between eight and 13 per cent annually, and we are expecting to see about 12,000 whales pass the Gold Coast in 2009."

Travellers interested in visiting the east coast of Australia can catch flights to Brisbane, Sydney, Bundaberg and other cities with airlines such as Emirates, Qantas and Cathay Pacific.

Set up by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the scheme is aimed at travellers making stopovers of 12 hours or less in Bangkok.

The national tourist board is hoping that the "appetiser" tours will encourage visitors to return to the Thai capital for longer visits in the future.

Excursions on offer to transfer passengers include boat rides along the Thonburi canals, tours of the Royal Palace complex and shopping trips in some of the city's leading retail areas.

Weerasak Kowsurat, chairman of the TAT, said: "The campaign will give transfer passengers a chance to enjoy a brief tour of the Thai capital and nearby provinces. By giving them a quick first impression, we hope to encourage them to come back for a longer stay in future."

Travellers often transfer between flights at Bangkok on their way to destinations in China, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

The new service will consist of three flights a week, departing from the UK on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.

Crawford Rix, managing director of bmibaby, said: "Our customers will now not only be able to purchase flights for this summer and winter but also right up until April 18th 2010, which includes the busy Easter period, meaning they can plan ahead and get the best deals."

The airline operates the majority of its European flights from its UK bases of Birmingham Airport, Cardiff Airport, East Midlands Airport and Manchester Airport.
